Our full-time teachers and expert part-time instructors share many combined years of experience in traditional classrooms and the homeschool environment.
Welcoming Atmosphere
Small student-teacher ratios and a comfortable, family-like community help students feel at home.
Meaningful Education
Middle school and high school students engage with rich, challenging material in the context of a less stressful pace and unhurried assignment schedule.
Illuminate Academics is a small house school in Duluth, Georgia. We exist to provide a meaningful Christian education in a close-knit, homelike setting. By meeting only two mornings a week and limiting assignments, our unique hybrid program offers the reassurance of structured academics with the freedom that accompanies a true homeschool experience.
Our students meet in 2 separate multi-age classrooms
The Intermediates program is for 6th-8th graders. This class serves as a bridge between a relaxed elementary education and a more traditional high school curriculum. In addition to a full language arts and math program, intermediate students also engage with formal lessons in science and history. Daily assignment loads are still closely monitored to ensure a gentle transition to more rigorous material.
The Core program is for high school students and advanced or gifted 8th graders. Although the high school subject matter shifts from year to year with the age and needs of our student body, the goal is fulfillment of core high school transcript requirements by the end of a student's junior year in high school. Every year, the Core class completes one course in each of the following disciplines: history and/or foreign language, English, science, and math. The 3-year cycle for each high school subject is as follows:
History (U.S. History, World History, Civics/Economics)
We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at a home in the Duluth/Suwanee area.
9:00 Classes begin
12:00 Lunch hour
1:30 Pick up
The Illuminate Academics year consists of four quarters, each 7-8 weeks in length, totaling approximately 32 weeks of instruction.
Our school year begins with special community events and math and reading assignments in mid-August. Regular classroom meetings resume in the last week of August.
We conclude our academic year in mid-May.

Science
The Core science program is comprised of the following courses of study -- biology, conceptual physics, and chemistry. Years of carefully curated curriculum and experience have resulted in a dynamic approach to science that works especially well for hybrid school students, including regular labs and hands-on classroom experiences. A selection of our texts and materials is as follows: Paul Hewitt and Conceptual Academy's Conceptual Physics, Clover Valley Chemistry, The Riot and the Dance (biology).
History
Over the course of our three year cycle, high school students receive instruction in U.S history,
civics and economics, and world history. With interactive history simulations, current events, and real books such as Joy Hakim's History of US serving as a cornerstone for our program, the study of history comes to life in the context of small group interaction and discussion.
Mathematics
Our math program includes one credit each in Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. All math courses include two days of classroom instruction and at-home video helps. An emphasis on deeper understanding, the setting of a reasoable pace, and a supportive environment are all designed to promote student success and confidence in a subject that can often feel intimidating.
English
High quality literature, real reading, and real writing form the basis of our 3-year English cycle. Core students delve into a variety of classic, modern, and Christian literature, applying a distinctly Biblical worldview to the material, exploring literary devices, and gaining an understanding of common themes. Writing and speech are implemented throughout each year as critical exercises in thought and communication.
Intermediates Class
The Intermediates class will serve as a bridge from the elementary to the middle years by increasing academic requirements while still retaining the fun of learning. Our teachers pack every moment with math and thinking skills practice, public speaking opportunities, history, science, and art activities, thought-provoking discussion of literature and literary devices, and grammar and writing instruction. Your child will be engaged and learning from the moment they set foot in her classroom until the minute they pack up to go home. With twice weekly meetings, the students receive enough assignments to foster responsibility while still leaving time to include activities unique to their own family’s homeschool culture.
You are invited to attend Illuminate Academics’ first open house on Thursday, February 22, 2018! The Open House will be held from 10-12 at my home in Duluth. Both the Core class (middle school) and elementary class will be welcoming visitors on that day. If you are interested in potentially registering for next year or simply curious about our story and vision, please join us that day! We will have a short information and question/answer session following the Open House

Sing a song of freedom
We wrote a bit of poetry in class this week. I didn’t necessarily intend for the assignment to be patriotic, but with our study of the Civil War fresh in their minds, this was the end result. It was a beautiful surprise. I hope you enjoy the following selections as much as I did —
So this is how liberty dies
With thunderous applause
When they came
We were unprepared
The world is theirs for the taking
With a mighty army and an iron fist
The past is fading like the mist
We must stand and fight them all
Or the world as we know it will fall
So with a flash of laser and clash of the gun
We’ll fight them all until it’s done
We’ll push them back into the stars
Then the world once again will be ours.
By Luke Johansen
Freedom isn’t free
This is easy to see
The world wrestling in agony
So we fight for our cause,
Oppressed we may be.
This is easy to see
It won’t be free.
We pay a price
Once. Twice. Thrice.
Brave men falling
Women weeping
Children lose their fathers.
Uncles lose their brothers.
It is not hard to see how easy it won’t be to win our freedom.

Grace Johansen
Hello, my name is Grace Johansen! Although I have classroom experience and am a teacher by trade, I consider homeschooling and raising my own children as my greatest accomplishment. I have had the privilege of doing exactly that for the last 15 years!
Over the years, I often dreamed of bringing the best that homeschool had to offer to a classroom setting. The launch of Illuminate Academics in the fall of 2017 was my dream come true! It is my joy to serve as the director and also the Core class teacher. Eighth, ninth, and tenth grade students are so much fun and my absolute favorite level to teach. My family watches in wide-eyed amusement as I happily pore over textbooks in my spare time! Learning and teaching students to love learning is my God-given passion. I am so thankful for the opportunity to answer His calling on my life here at Illuminate Academics.
Angela Grubbs
We are so blessed to have our very own writing specialist on staff. Angela Grubbs is one of the best kept secrets in our local homeschooling community. The magic she works with the youngest reluctant writers is nothing short of remarkable!
From a very young age, I saw both of my parents who were hard-working teachers come home daily and talk about their students and their rewarding experiences. I wanted to be a part of the excitement as I would “play school” for many hours.
Now, years later, I have been given the unique opportunity to teach others. I started as a public and private school teacher for 13 years. Then, I was truly blessed with having my own children. Although I enjoyed spending time teaching other children in public and private schools, I felt called to direct my passion for teaching towards my own children in their education. This will be my seventh year homeschooling my own three girls.
Although it has been a rewarding experience teaching my daughters, I also missed the unique group learning experience that can happen in a class setting. As I have experienced the Illuminate program, I have been very impressed with the “classroom feel” with a much more personable approach in a small setting. I feel honored to be the primary instructor for the Illuminate Juniors’ group and look forward to our educational journey.

During the 2019-2020 school year I taught Geometry at Illuminate, and it ended up being one of the best experiences of my life! I am so excited to be coming back for the 2020-2021 school year to teach Algebra 2, and I have tons of fun in store.
I believe truly and whole-heatedly that while math is a difficult subject, it doesn't have to be a terrible one! It is important to me that my students learn what they need to know for Georgia standards and for college, but I also believe it's necessary to teach the students why they need to know the stuff they're learning. I love showing my students how they can apply the math from class to every day life, and I'm a big fan of projects and fun activities! I've been tutoring math and science for years now, and I am so excited to have a class of my own. Geometry last year was fantastic, but it pales in comparison to all of the cool things we're going to learn this year. I can't wait to see you all very soon!
Vanessa Leap
¡Hola! I was born in Lima, Perú where I graduated in Business Administration and Marketing. I worked as a Sales Manager in Perú for several years until I moved to United States in 2001. I moved to marry my husband of eighteen years, David Leap. We have two daughters, Amanda 15, and Rebecca 14.
When I moved to United States, I started working at Home Depot as a sales associate where I realized how important having a foreign language is. My daughters attended public school for K-1st grade before we started homeschooling. When we started homeschooling in 2012, we not only changed schools, but we changed our lives! Both, foreign languages and homeschooling became a very important part of my life, and putting these things together was when God gave me the opportunity to start teaching Spanish. I started working as a Spanish teacher/tutor to homeschoolers 8 years ago. I’ve been teaching elementary, middle and high school classes from home and at different homeschool schools. Since my very first class, teaching Spanish became my passion. I love to teach the language I grew up with, and I love to share the Latin culture, and traditions. But my favorite part is when my students pray or recite Bible verses in Spanish! I never imagined moving outside my native country. I never imagined teaching or homeschooling before, but I am so very thankful for the plans that God had for me and for each student I have had the opportunity to teach. I can’t wait to teach at Illuminate Academics this school year. I’m already praying for my students.
¡Hasta la vista!
Cindy Heath
Hello! My name is Cindy Heath - follower of Jesus, wife of hubby Bob for 25 years, mama to three precious young people, and teaching nerd who actually thrives on putting together lesson plans! Playing “school” since the time I started Kindergarten, I never wavered in my desire to become a teacher. The creativity it takes to put together a lesson that meets a variety of learning styles and most importantly is productive and engaging (hopefully fun) is a challenge that feels so satisfying when met. The small group environment of Illuminate provides the ability to get to know my students so that I can teach THEM - the lesson is just the vehicle to helps us get to the relationships between each other and between concepts.
After playing school for years, I worked in various day care centers, etc. throughout college. I then taught in public schools for 7 years while obtaining a Masters degree in Reading Instruction until our daughter was born 21 years ago. I transitioned from public school to homeschool the minute she was born, adding two boys to the mix soon after. All of our children were homeschooled all the way to high school graduation (with various outside classes added). Our youngest son is extremely outgoing and is really not liking being the only child! He misses his siblings who have gone on to graduate from college and work in the private sector. Therefore, we have enrolled him at a 2 day a week hybrid program called The King’s Academy in Woodstock for this coming year. He has been involved in their JROTC program in the past and is now a member of the football team as well. With all of the children moving into their own spheres of life and interest, it was time for me to utilize my love of students and of teaching elsewhere!
I am so excited for the opportunity to teach your upper elementary and young middle school students! Several of my years teaching in public schools were in 4th grade which I completely enjoyed. This stage is such a time of rapid growth and learning. Students are old enough to start really thinking and discussing more concepts, but young enough to not think learning games are super dorky - at least not too much. All subjects are fun at this age, and I cannot wait to get started! I tend to incorporate literature of ALL levels into my teaching of ALL subjects; hence, the library in my basement! I look forward to meeting you all. God bless!
